Mumbai’s June art lineup blends heritage with contemporary insight

top-news

Mumbai’s art landscape this June offers a diverse range of exhibitions that highlight both traditional and modern artistic voices. From deeply introspective visual journeys to sharp contemporary critiques, the city’s galleries are set to engage viewers with thoughtful and original works.

Manoj Jain – It Didn’t Ask to Be Art
At Soho House in Juhu, Manoj Jain presents his debut solo show It Didn’t Ask to Be Art on June 1, following a preview on May 31. Curated by Dheeya Soumaiya, this exhibition is rooted in the Art Brut tradition, focusing on raw, unfiltered expression rather than polished aesthetics. Jain’s works are emotionally driven pieces that reflect a process of internal transformation. These artworks are less about display and more about release, resembling visual journals of vulnerability and healing. Each piece embodies a sense of necessity—created not for exhibition, but as a form of emotional and spiritual evolution.

Shikh Sabbir Alam – Bon-Manush
Currently on view at Experimenter Colaba and will continue up to June 21, Shikh Sabbir Alam’s Bon-Manush reflects on the intricate relationship between humans and the natural world. The title refers to the ‘forest man’—a philosophical figure who bridges the divide between civilization and wilderness. Alam’s paintings explore dualities such as growth and decay, fear and wonder. His symbolic style invites the viewer to consider nature not as a passive setting but as an active force intertwined with human existence.

Anirban Mitra – I Dissect Therefore I Am
Sakshi Gallery, Colaba, is showcasing Anirban Mitra’s I Dissect Therefore I Am, which will continue up to June 7. This visually dense series merges cultural history, anatomy, and consumer symbolism into scroll-like canvases. Mitra constructs his figures using circuitry and neon tones, offering a mechanized view of the body that critiques commodification and postcolonial identity. His layered imagery disrupts traditional viewing, compelling the audience to interrogate cultural narratives and inherited systems.

Dheeraj Jadhav – Inheritance of a Feeling
At Method Kala Ghoda and will continue up to June 15, Dheeraj Jadhav’s exhibition uses monochromatic inkblots to examine memory and emotion. Inspired by Banjara folklore and ancestral motifs, Jadhav’s abstract compositions function as visual triggers for personal reflection. One striking color piece among black-and-white works marks a symbolic shift—suggesting transformation within the emotional self.

Kala Connect Art Exhibition 2025
From May 30 to June 1, the Nehru Centre Art Gallery hosts Kala Connect 2025, a three-day group exhibition celebrating diversity in artistic expression. Featuring both emerging and established talents, the event spans various media and traditions, providing a wide lens on the current creative climate in India.

These exhibitions affirm Mumbai’s dynamic role as a cultural hub where tradition and innovation intersect meaningfully.
