Files 129 cases against offenders
In a determined effort to curb power theft and unauthorized electricity usage, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Corporation Limited (MSEDCL), has filed cases against 129 individuals who were found guilty of such malpractices. The initiative, led by Chief Engineer of Bhandup Parimandal, Sunil Kakade, aimed to address the issue of high power loss in Ghansoli.
The campaign, executed under the guidance of Superintending Engineer Vashi Mandal, Sinhajirao Gaikwad, witnessed collaboration between Vashi Division and Nerul Division. A total of 146 cases, amounting to approximately Rs. 77 lakhs, were exposed under Section 135 during the campaign.
Additionally, 26 cases of unauthorized electricity usage, falling under Section 126, were also identified. As a result, electricity bills totalling a penalty amount of approximately Rs. 12.95 lakhs were paid. In total, 175 cases of electricity theft and unauthorized use, accumulating to Rs. 90 lakhs, were exposed during the campaign.
According to the provisions of the law, consumers involved in electricity theft for the first time have the option to pay the compounding amount along with the electricity bill. However, 129 consumers out of the 146 cases uncovered in Ghansoli failed to comply with these terms. Sunil Sarode, Assistant Engineer of Ghansoli Branch, subsequently filed FIRs under Section 135 of the Electricity Act 2003 against these consumers at Vashi Police Station.
The mission was successful due to the efforts of Superintending Engineer Sinhajirao Gaikwad, Executive Engineer Mohod of Vashi Division, Asst. Executive Engineer Gofne of Airoli Sub-Division, Asst. Executive Engineer Kasal of Vashi Division, Assistant Engineer Sunil Sarode of Nerul Division, and others from Vashi Divisions. The notable contribution of women engineers in this initiative was especially commendable.
