Vashi: A morgue worker allegedly at the Vashi civic hospital extorted Rs 2,000 from the relatives of a deceased young woman to properly wrap her body in cloth. The matter came into public view after a video of the incident went viral on social media, prompting aggressive protests by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers.
The case pertains to a 23-year-old woman from Airoli who died by suicide on June 15. Her body was brought to the NMMC Hospital in Vashi for post-mortem. While the body was kept in the hospital morgue, her relatives, who had arrived from Kanpur, were approached by a morgue staff member who demanded Rs 2,000 to properly wrap the body in cloth.
The entire incident was caught on camera and widely circulated online, drawing widespread condemnation. Taking serious note of the issue, MNS party workers stormed the hospital and confronted the medical superintendent. In a symbolic protest, they wrapped the superintendent in burial cloth typically used for corpses and staged a demonstration.
The MNS workers also demanded that a criminal case be registered against the staff member involved. Though no formal complaint has been filed, hospital administration has assured strict action against those responsible.
