Uran: In a significant development for the local fishing industry, fishermen at Karanja port will no longer need to travel to exporters to sell their catch. Instead, exporting companies will now come to Karanja port to buy fish directly from the fishermen. This new arrangement aims to streamline the fish export process and enhance the profitability for local fishermen.
The announcement was made by Uran MLA Mahesh Baldi during a program held at Karanja port on Thursday, August 15, which also marked the inauguration of the Dronagiri fish market. The market was launched as part of Independence Day celebrations and is designed to facilitate local transactions and provide a venue for fishermen to buy and sell fish.
Speaking at the event, MLA Mahesh Baldi highlighted the advancements at Karanja port, which has been developed with an investment of Rs.150 crores from the Centre and state government. "This modern port, built with advanced technology, will benefit local fishermen by eliminating the need to travel to exporters. Instead, the exporters will come to Karanja to purchase fish," MLA Baldi stated.
He also assured that additional facilities, including required sheds for fishermen, will be constructed within the next month. The port has already generated 20,000 to 25,000 jobs and has seen interest from numerous exporting companies.
Pradeep Nakhwa, President of the Karanja Fishermen's Co-operative Society, noted that fish sold in the local market, including varieties like Mackerel, Tuna, catfish, king mackerel, and Indian Mackerel, are fetching higher prices compared to exports. This has turned the Karanja fishing port into a thriving hub for the fishing industry.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Karanja Fisherman Society Chairman Pradeep Nakhwa, Purse Seine Fishing Welfare Association Chairman Ganesh Nakhwa, former chairmen, and other prominent figures. The port remains open 24 hours, accommodating the needs of both fishermen and exporting companies, further bolstering the local economy and fish trade.
