Bhayandar: An overhead water storage tank in the Mahajanwadi area of Mira Road has been flagged as potentially hazardous by local social activists, raising concerns about public safety. The complaint was formally submitted to the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), prompting an official inspection of the structure.
The water tank, with a storage capacity of 20 million litre, is part of the city's broader water infrastructure system, supplied through the Shahad Temghar Water Supply Scheme and MIDC. To meet the needs of the city's growing population, MBMC has constructed multiple elevated water tanks across various sectors.
However, the Mahajanwadi tank has recently shown signs of distress. Water reportedly overflows after the tank reaches capacity, weakening the structure’s base and water logging and seepage around the tank. Local activist Narendra Uparkar has warned that the tank could pose a serious risk if left unaddressed.
“There’s visible erosion beneath the tank due to continuous water leakage. A structural collapse could occur at any time if preventive measures are not taken,” said Uparkar in his formal complaint to the municipal authorities.
Following the complaint, MBMC officials conducted a site inspection. While the MBMC officials acknowledged minor issues, they reassured residents that the core structure of the tank remains intact.
“There is no immediate threat to the tank’s structural integrity. The tank is embedded 15 meters below ground level, and the core remains stable. However, the protective fencing has been damaged due to water overflow. We are currently working on a redesigned boundary wall to replace the damaged section,” Sharad Nanegaonkar, executive engineer, MBMC, said.
The MBMC has committed to necessary repairs to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of nearby residents. Work on the protective wall is expected to commence soon, pending final design approvals.
