Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Metro is fast transforming the city’s urban landscape, offering an efficient and eco-friendly alternative to road transport. Developed by the Cidco, the metro network aims to seamlessly link key areas within Navi Mumbai and improve connectivity with Greater Mumbai.

“The Navi Mumbai Metro project has been planned to provide excellent intra-city connectivity within Navi Mumbai. Metro Line No. 1, developed from Belapur to Pendhar, has received a great response from commuters since day one. This metro line has provided excellent connectivity to CIDCO housing complexes in CBD Belapur, Taloja MIDC, Kharghar, and Taloja. Implementation of Metro lines No. 2, 3, and 4 will also be carried out in the near future. Additionally, there is an ambitious plan to connect Navi Mumbai International Airport and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport via Mumbai Metro in the coming period,” said CIDCO’s Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Shri Vijay Singhal.

The metro is being developed in phases across a 25 km corridor. Phase 1, Metro Line 1, runs 11.1 km from CBD Belapur to Pendhar and became operational in November 2023. Operated by Maha Metro, this elevated line has become an essential transport lifeline, reducing road congestion and travel time.

Line 1 is being extended by 3.02 km (Line 1A) up to NMIA via Sagarsangam interchange station. This extension will directly connect commuters to the airport, making the metro a convenient option for air travellers.

To ensure safe and efficient operations, CIDCO has set up an Operations Control Centre for real-time train monitoring and a driving simulator to train metro operators.

Planning is underway for Metro Line 2, a proposed 15 km stretch linking Pendhar with NMIA’s eastern side. It will serve PMAY housing clusters and Taloja MIDC, improving daily commutes for industrial workers and office-goers.

One of the most ambitious plans under CIDCO’s vision is Metro Line 8, a 35 km corridor that will link CSMIA in Mumbai with NMIA in Navi Mumbai.

With a mix of underground and elevated sections, the route will pass through Kurla, LTT, Mankhurd, Vashi, Nerul, and Belapur, drastically cutting inter-airport travel time.
