In response to the proposed Mathadi Act Amendment Bill No. 34 of 2023, the Mathadi Act Rescue Action Committee has urged all Mathadi workers in Maharashtra to participate in a symbolic strike scheduled for December 14. The committee aims to prevent potential misuse of the Mathadi Act, highlight the issues faced by Mathadi workers, and emphasize the need for effective implementation of the Act.

A joint meeting, convened by Maharashtra's Chief Minister Eknath Shinde along with the Deputy Chief Minister, Home and Finance Ministers, and stakeholders from the Action Committee, is set to take place on December 13 at Nagpur Vidhan Sabha. The outcome of this crucial meeting will determine the stance and actions regarding the proposed strike on December 14.

The Mathadi Act Bill No. 34 of 2023, introduced during the Monsoon Session of the Legislature by the State's Labour Department, faced opposition from major organizations representing Mathadi workers. Consequently, it was referred to the Joint Medical Committee for extensive deliberation. The primary demands put forth by the Mathadi Act Defense Action Committee include the withdrawal of the Bill, establishment of a joint committee comprising government, employer, and labour representatives, and thorough discussions to prevent misuse of the Act while ensuring its effective implementation.

Members of this committee, including prominent figures like General Secretary Narendra Patil of Maharashtra State Mathadi, Transport and General Workers Union, and Baba Adhav, President of Maharashtra State Hamal Mapadi Corporation, among others, emphasize the potential risks associated with the proposed amendments. There are concerns that certain omissions, additions, and alterations within the Bill might jeopardize the essence of the Mathadi Act itself.

Despite efforts by Mathadi workers' representatives to engage in dialogue and suggest amendments through the Joint Medical Committee, the state government's lack of positive engagement has led to the declaration of a symbolic strike on December 14.

The Mathadi Act Defense Action Committee plans to announce its next course of action following discussions held with the state government during the meeting scheduled for December 13 at Nagpur Vidhan Bhavan, chaired by the Chief Minister. The committee remains steadfast in its commitment to address the concerns of Mathadi workers and safeguard their rights under the Act.
