Kalyan: With a view to prevent a repeat of the Mumbra local train tragedy, a special meeting was held to discuss problems faced by Central Line commuters especially those from Kalyan, Dombivli, etc.
The meeting was held on June 15 under the chairmanship of senior MLA Sanjay Kelkar and Konkan Graduates Constituency MLC Niranjan Davkhare. Manohar Shelar, member Suburban Railway Advisory Committee, and Sandeep Shah, official representative from Vangani, were among those who attended.
Key demands and suggestions put forth during the meeting, include, declaring Vangani as a terminal station and operating local trains from Vangani to Mumbai via the yard, increasing the frequency of local trains between Kalyan–Karjat and Kalyan–Kasara, and introducing 15-coach rakes on Titwala and Badlapur routes.
Also suggested was establishing trauma care centres on Karjat and Kasara routes, increasing reserved seating for senior citizens in local trains, introducing more ladies' special locals on the Badlapur and Titwala routes. Reducing fares of AC locals, stationing more ATVMs was also suggested.
Stagger working hours for government, private, municipal offices, and banking institutions in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) was also suggested to reduce peak-hour congestion.
The demands and suggestions will now be submitted to the Union Railway Minister and the Railway Board by the Maharashtra Government and the state BJP unit. This has raised hopes among daily commuters that their long-pending issues may finally get resolved.
