In a recent development surrounding the controversial 9PBR construction project in sector 60, Nerul, a joint inspection planned for Monday, December 4th, was obstructed by the security personnel at the site. The inspection team comprised government officials, forest officers, and environmental activist Sunil Agarwal, who had previously raised concerns about the construction's impact on the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) and nearby wetlands.
Sunil Agarwal, the founder of the Save Navi Mumbai Environment group, had formally requested the inspection in September 2023, emphasizing the need for a protective fence around the CRZ II area to safeguard the adjacent wetlands. Despite repeated appeals, construction proceeded without implementing necessary safeguards.
On November 29, 2023, a team of government officials accompanied Agarwal to inspect the site. However, they were denied entry by security personnel, citing Agarwal's status as a "private citizen." Agarwal, being the primary complainant, expressed disappointment over the denial, revealing, "Today (5th December), a joint inspection was scheduled at 9PBR for construction happening next to a protected wetland without a designated buffer zone and fencing. It is unfortunate that the inspection was not carried out because the security personnel denied my entry, branding me as a 'private citizen.' I have already filed a petition in the courts regarding construction on a protected wetland. The entire team decided to cancel the inspection."
Agarwal promptly escalated the matter to higher authorities, including Anita Patil, Deputy Conservator of Forest (Mangrove), and sought another inspection date with police protection. This incident adds to a series of attempts by Agarwal since 2021 to address concerns about construction on CRZ land without adequate protection for the buffer zone and wetlands.
