The Indian team, having secured their place in the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 following a convincing 4-1 win over Wales in the final Pool B league encounter of the FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers 2026, will now face Italy, who finished second in Pool A with four points, on Friday, 13 March, to seal their spot in the final.

Navneet Kaur (29’, 34’, 55’) led the attack with a hat-trick, while Sakshi Rana (7’) also contributed to the winning cause, much to the delight of the capacity home crowd. Wales’ Betsan Thomas (39’) reduced the deficit following a rare lapse by the Indian defence inside the striking circle at the Gachibowli Hockey Complex, Hyderabad, Telangana on Wednesday evening.

The result against Wales ensured that hosts India finished top of the table with seven points (two wins and one draw), ahead of Scotland, who also collected seven points to finish second in the group.

India’s second triumph in the Qualifiers followed their resounding 4-0 win over South American side Uruguay in the tournament opener on International Women’s Day. Sunelita Toppo (21’), Ishika (40’), Lalremsiami (49’), and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal (58’) scored for India.

This was followed by a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Scotland. India had taken a 2-1 lead through goals by Navneet Kaur (18’) and Sunelita Toppo (29’), after Scotland’s skipper Heather McEwan (6’) had put her team ahead early. Fiona Burnet (33’) ensured a draw soon after the restart. Despite late attacking chances, including nine penalty corners, India could not find a winner.

India holds a psychological edge in the last-four knockout stage, having won five of their last seven encounters against Italy since 2012, with one loss and one draw.

A key player has been forward Navneet Kaur, currently the joint top scorer of the tournament with four goals. Her hat-trick against Wales has bolstered the team’s confidence ahead of the semi-final. Italy will rely on Federica Carta, who has scored three goals. Despite their lower ranking, Italy’s tactical play could challenge India.

Speaking ahead of the semi-final, Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne stated: “Securing qualification for the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup 2026 was an important milestone for this group, and the players deserve a lot of credit for their performance throughout the tournament. They showed good discipline, composure, and attacking intent during the pool stage.”

He added, “Our mindset was clear — we were not just there to qualify. We aimed to improve with every match and sought to win the tournament. The semi-final presents another big challenge, and we approached it with full focus and intensity.”

Acknowledging Italy’s strength, he said: “Italy is a competitive side, and they have demonstrated in this tournament that they can trouble strong teams. For us, the focus remains on executing our plans effectively, maintaining our structure, and continuing to play with energy and confidence.”

Earlier, England maintained their perfect Pool A record with a 2-0 victory over Austria, securing their semi-final spot against Scotland. Grace Balsdon opened the scoring with a penalty corner, with Holly Hunt adding a second goal in the 48th minute. Austria concluded the tournament with three defeats.

India seals a World Cup berth

India’s World Cup qualification was secured through a tournament rule granting a berth to the highest-ranked team finishing fourth in the qualifying events. Two-time Asia Cup champions India, currently ranked ninth in the world, ensured their spot by being the highest-ranked fourth-placed team across the two qualifying tournaments, following the Santiago leg, where Chile, Australia, and Ireland claimed direct qualification.
