Navi Mumbai: The crime branch has arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly trapping and repeatedly sexually assaulting a 17-year-old minor girl over the past year. The accused reportedly used threats and physical violence to keep the victim silenced before the ordeal finally came to light.
The accused, identified as Rakesh Gharat (35), a resident of the Ulwe area, had been acquainted with the victim since March 2024. According to police reports, Gharat exploited their proximity to build a forced relationship.
Investigations revealed that the accused had been constantly pressuring the minor to accept his 'romantic proposals.' When she resisted, he allegedly resorted to physical assault and issued death threats against her and her family. Under this atmosphere of extreme fear and trauma, the accused continued to sexually exploit the minor for nearly a year.
The matter escalated on March 11, when the accused once again forced himself upon the victim. Unable to bear the trauma any longer, the girl confided in her parents and narrated the entire ordeal. When the victim’s parents confronted Gharat, he reportedly showed no remorse and instead used foul language, threatening them with dire consequences. Following this, the family immediately approached the Ulwe Police Station to seek justice.
Recognizing the gravity of the crime, the Ulwe Police acted swiftly and took Rakesh Gharat into custody. A case has been registered under several stringent sections of the law: Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS): Sections 64(1) [Rape], 115(2), 351(2), and 352. Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act: Sections 4, 8, and 12. The police have confirmed that the accused has been officially arrested, and further investigation is underway to ensure a strong legal case.
