Fishermen threaten protest at Sewri–Nhava Sea Link inauguration over compensation delays

As the inauguration of the Sewri–Nhava Sea Link by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 12 approaches, tensions rise over unresolved compensation issues for affected fishermen. Former B ward committee member, Manoj Meher, has issued a stern warning, demanding a comprehensive survey of affected fishermen and immediate compensation, failing which they vow to stage a protest during the inauguration by displaying black flags from their boats.

The completion of the Sewri to Nhava-Sheva Bridge connecting Mumbai and Navi Mumbai International Airport, executed by MMRDA, has adversely impacted the livelihoods of local fishermen. The project's encroachment on fishing areas has placed their businesses at risk, creating a severe economic crisis for the affected individuals.

MLA Manda Mhatre intervened with the government to secure compensation in line with existing policies for affected fishermen. While some in Navi Mumbai have received initial compensation in installments, approximately half of the affected fishermen remain without compensation.

A government-formed committee was tasked with ensuring that no fishermen were overlooked during the bridge's construction. However, their failure to conduct comprehensive surveys across Navi Mumbai villages has left many fishermen without the promised compensation.

Expressing frustration at the committee's inefficiencies, the former B Ward Committee demands immediate action. Manoj Meher, a committee member, has personally approached Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to address this pressing issue. Meher has cautioned that if unresolved, affected fishermen will gather beneath the Sewri- Nhava Bridge on inauguration day, displaying black flags to symbolize their grievances.
