Empty milk pouches, new purpose: Kapithra Kannapiran’s recycling revolution

Vashi: Every morning, thousands of households across India discard empty milk pouches, lightweight, durable, and made of 50–60 micron virgin plastic, without realising their hidden value. Kapithra Kannapiran, a Vashi resident, saw potential where others saw trash. On World Environment Day 2022, she launched The Milk Bag Project in Navi Mumbai, transforming discarded milk packets into recyclable resources and diverting 1.5 lakh packets (500–550 kg) from landfills in just four years.
“These pouches can be recycled into irrigation pipes, containers, dustbins, buckets, and mugs,” says Kannapiran, founder of Owe Earth® Nature Collective. “In 2026 alone, we’ve collected 10–12 kg (2,500–3,000 packets) in just two months, proof that small actions create big impact.”
Kannapiran’s journey began with a simple habit: washing, drying, and collecting milk bags instead of tossing them. Inspired by Mumbai’s Hansu Pardiwala, Kunti Oza, and Chitra Hiremath, who pioneered a similar project with NGOs like Clean Mumbai Foundation and Garbage Free India, she replicated the model in Navi Mumbai. “I connected with them in May 2022 to understand how to bring this change home,” she recalls.
Today, Owe Earth® collaborates with 300+ families, turning mindfulness into collective action. The project operates through cluster drop centres in Ghansoli, Kharghar, Vashi, and Sanpada, with volunteers ensuring milk packets are cleaned, bundled, and sent to Mumbai’s recycling hub near Colaba Causeway.
Kannapiran’s vision is clear: “We need more volunteers to make this system efficient. Every packet saved is plastic, not buried in a landfill.”
