In an incident which took place dueing the early hours of Saturday (Feb. 8th) morning, a speeding dumper travelling from Mumbai towards Pune struck a foot-over-bridge on the Sion-Panvel Highway near Sanpada at around 3:00 a.m. The impact caused the dumper to get stuck on the footbridge. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and no lives were lost in the accident. However, the pedestrian bridge sustained damage.
The dumper, which was headed from Vashi to Belapur, collided with the bridge’s rear section, causing it to become stuck on the structure. The incident raised concerns among the local authorities, as there were fears of further accidents or traffic disruptions during the night.
Upon receiving the information, the Turbhe Traffic Police immediately responded to the scene and worked on moving the stuck vehicle to the side, preventing further complications and ensuring the smooth flow of traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Highway.
The pedestrian bridge, built by the Public Works Department (PWD) a few years ago, had recently been extended to the Sion-Panvel Highway to help pedestrians cross safely. While the bridge is constructed at the required height, questions have arisen regarding how the dumper managed to strike it. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the collision.
Satish Jadhav, Police Inspector of the Turbhe Traffic Branch, commented, "The dumper truck that got stuck on the foot-over-bridge in Sanpada was promptly removed around dawn. Given the potential damage to the bridge, we have requested the Public Works Department to conduct an inspection of the structure”.
