Domestic Workers’ Sansad to be held on International Domestic Workers’ Day

Vashi: A Domestic Workers’ Sansad will be held in Vashi, on June 17 on the occasion of International Domestic Workers’ Day to press for national legislation to safeguard the rights of domestic workers.

Organized by YUVA and the Maharashtra State Domestic Workers over 1,000 domestic workers from across Maharashtra are expected to assemble at the event.

Justice BG Kolse Patil (retd) Bombay High Court will deliver the keynote address on legal and constitutional provisions for unorganised workers.

The programme will include Meri Kahani, Meri Zubani, a session where domestic workers will share real-life stories of hardship and triumph.

A statewide campaign Aapla Khasdar – Pratibaddh Khasdar (Our MP – Committed MP), was also launched. As part of the campaign workers across 18 districts of the state met MPs and sent letters to the Prime Minister’s Office demanding national legislation.

International Domestic Workers’ Day, observed on June 16, commemorates the adoption of ILO Convention No. 189, which recognizes domestic workers as legitimate labourers entitled to fundamental rights.
