Following action, officials from the retail giant pay tax arrears

In a stern move by the property tax department of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), retail giant D Mart in Sanpada came under scrutiny for non-payment of property taxes amounting to Rs. 1.60 crores.

The Property Tax Department had issued repeated notices to D-Mart management regarding their substantial property tax arrears. However, these warnings went unheeded, leading to the suspension of proceedings for the payment of the outstanding amount.

Tax Inspector Dattatraya Kale along with a team, visited D Mart in Sanpada to initiate the process. Facing the prospect of property seizure, D-Mart's management swiftly expressed willingness to settle the outstanding property tax of Rs. 1.60 crores. Consequently, further aggressive measures were temporarily postponed.

“The Municipal Corporation has adopted an assertive stance to address tax non-compliance, with the initiation of arrest notices for customers with arrears ranging from Rs.10 to Rs.25 lakhs”, informed an official.

Under the ongoing tax collection campaign, property tax inspectors from the eight ward offices of the Municipal Corporation have issued hundreds of notices. Once these notices expire, the property tax collection team proceeds to seize the properties of the defaulting customers. This approach has prompted many property owners to promptly clear their dues to avoid the risk of property foreclosure.

In a parallel development, tax payment notices were issued to six shops adjacent to the RTO office at APMC Grain Market. One shopkeeper promptly paid Rs. 10 lakhs. However, other shopkeepers who failed to clear their tax dues faced the prospect of their shops being seized by the authorities.
