Commuters in distress: Homeless people camp at Koparkhairane railway station

top-news

Koparkhairane railway station has become an unexpected refuge site for the homeless. Every evening, the shed that was made for commuters to conveniently walk across the station is filled with homeless people setting up their temporary shelters for the night. This is creating concern for regular commuters such as Mr. Printo Francis, who has to use the station daily. Mr. Printo said, "I travel through this station every day and can see that in the morning there aren't many homeless people, but in the evening the shed is packed with them. They use coal stoves and cook their meals, and basically use this shed as their home.”

This problem has been agitating commuters for a long time, commenting on the reason behind the influx of the homeless, Mrs. Surya Gigesh, a resident of Sector-4 Koparkhairane said, "The barren land next to the Koparkhairane railway station was home to a large slum where people had managed to build some sort of shelter to live in. However, a few months ago, the area was declared a part of a real estate project. The police had to seal the land however, there were multiple shelters built by the homeless on the land. Hence, the police were tasked with clearing all the tents and shelters built there. As a resident witnessing that scene broke my heart. These people watched their homes being destroyed with no other place to go. Since then, they've been seeking shelter at the station, becoming a source of irritation for the daily commuters.”

Some residents are also concerned about the homeless peoples’ living conditions. A resident expressed their concern and said, "The presence of so many homeless people at Koparkhairane Station has become a major concern in our neighbourhood. It is heartbreaking to see people living in such horrible conditions and without access to basic necessities like food, water, and shelter. They collectively use the public washroom of the station, this is a major health hazard for them and other commuters. As a community I think we have failed to take care of our own people. The authorities and residents together should strive to relocate the homeless into shelters, make arrangements for their food and other essential services for they are the most vulnerable members of our community”.
