Vashi: Navi Mumbai woke up to intense rain and thunderstorms on May 7 after a night of gusty winds and moderate showers that swept through the city and neighbouring Thane. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Mumbai city under a ‘Yellow’ alert for May 7 and 8, cautioning residents about continued rain and stormy conditions.

According to the IMD, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is expected to see more rain and thunderstorms over the next two days, with the yellow alert remaining in effect until May 8 morning.

Weather experts have attributed these unseasonal showers to a strong western disturbance active at lower atmospheric levels. The system has now moved over West Rajasthan and surrounding areas, impacting weather across the Konkan belt.

Meanwhile, data from the disaster management cell of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation recorded significant rainfall in different parts of the city between 6:00 pm on May 6 and 6:00 pm on May 7. Vashi logged 41.66 mm of rain, Kopar Khairane recorded 50.29 mm, Digha 27.00 mm, Airoli 20.83 mm, Belapur 6.00 mm, and Nerul 11.68 mm.

The civic body also reported 19 incidents of trees or branches falling due to the weather, with 8 cases in Vashi, 4 in Nerul, 3 in Airoli, and 2 each in Belapur and Kopar Khairane. Additionally, three fire incidents were reported across the city; however, officials confirmed these were unrelated to the rainfall.
