Asian Waterbird Census 2023: NMMC to survey migratory and local birds in wetlands

Following directives from the National Biodiversity Authority, a comprehensive survey of migratory and local avian species in the wetlands of Navi Mumbai is set to unfold. This significant census operation falls under the auspices of the Asian Waterbird Census 2023 initiative, with the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) recently issuing a tender for its execution.

Navi Mumbai, situated between the Sahyadri mountain range to the east and a vast coastline to the west, encompasses a coastal expanse spanning 19.92 square meters. This pristine coastline is renowned for its abundant biodiversity, making it a favoured haven for thousands of migratory birds seeking refuge each year. In addition to these foreign feathered visitors, the region is also home to a diverse array of local bird species, all of which contribute to the vibrant ecosystem. However, despite their ecological significance, the precise numbers of these avian inhabitants remain unrecorded in the municipality's archives.

In a pioneering move, the Municipal Corporation has decided to embark on a comprehensive bird survey along the bay, marking its maiden collaboration with a private avian organization. This significant endeavour aligns with the Asian Waterbird Census 2023 initiative, a longstanding citizen science program initiated in 1987.

The Asian Waterbird Census, held annually in January, mobilizes thousands of volunteers from Asia and Australia to venture to their respective wetland areas and meticulously count waterfowl populations. The program plays a pivotal role in monitoring and conserving avian diversity across the region.

Vijay Raut, Executive Engineer of the Municipal Environment Department, confirmed the initiation of the tender process and underscored the municipal corporation's commitment to deepening the understanding of avian life within Navi Mumbai's wetland ecosystem.
