Ambernath: The Ambernath Municipal Council had promised free cremation services using electric, gas, or diesel furnaces at the Kailashnagar crematorium. Despite installing necessary infrastructure six months ago, the services are not operational.
In the absence of the services, Ambernath residents are left to rely on traditional wood-fired cremation, which costs between Rs 5,000 and Rs 6,000. This includes Rs 3,000 for wood provided by M/s PSL Waste Management LLP, along with other ritual-related expenses.
When questioned about the delay, Chief Officer Umakant Gaikwad explained, "The electric and gas-based system is ready, but we are waiting for a trial, which cannot proceed without an unclaimed body."
However, for the public the administrative delays are causing unnecessary emotional and financial hardship.
Traditional cremations require 300-400 kg of wood per pyre, contributing to deforestation and harmful emissions. Despite having a cleaner, more sustainable alternative ready, the municipal council's inaction is hindering progress on both environmental and public welfare fronts.
