Prompt action ensues

The vigilant actions of a concerned resident averted an environmental catastrophe yesterday as illegal debris dumping in Lotus Lake was thwarted. Lotus Lake, situated in sector 27, Nerul, has been continuously threatened by unlawful dumping activities. Despite persistent efforts, debris dumping still occurs, often under the cover of darkness along the lake's banks. However, on Wednesday afternoon, Devendra Kumar Jain, a member of the Save Lotus Lake group and a resident of the area, noticed debris being pushed into the lake waters by a JCB machine. Acting swiftly, he captured photographic evidence from his car and shared it with the 'Save Lotus Lake group.'

Advocate Pradeep Patole, a staunch advocate for preserving the lake, promptly notified the debris clearance department of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) upon receiving the evidence. Responding promptly, Mr. Bamne, an officer from the NMMC, mobilized his team and cordoned off the area where the debris had been dumped, adding a protective green cover. Despite initial reluctance from the local police station to register an FIR, a non-cognizable offence was filed by the NMMC staff Bamne. Advocate Patole, along with other residents, lodged complaints with the civic authorities regarding trespassing and illegal dumping on NMMC land.

In response to the incident, Advocate Patole circulated a message among residents of sector 27 Nerul, urging them to report any instances of debris dumping or presence of JCB machines near Lotus Lake promptly. He highlighted an ongoing court case addressing debris dumping and illegal activities within the lake, with the next hearing scheduled in two weeks.

Members of the Save Lotus Lake group expressed outrage upon seeing the photographic evidence of debris dumping and demanded immediate action, including the confiscation of the JCB machine. They also called for stringent measures against the debris mafia, urging the NMMC and CIDCO to adhere to Bombay High Court orders to prevent further dumping in Lotus Lake.

Sunil Agarwal, another member, presented key demands to the NMMC, emphasizing the need for enforcement of court orders to protect wetlands from encroachment and destruction. He highlighted instances of negligence, such as the absence of patrolling and fencing around wetlands, and failure to address illegal construction activities despite court directives.

The group also criticized CIDCO's issuance of commencement certificates for projects without proper environmental safeguards and called for immediate action to protect sensitive ecosystems.
