Navi Mumbai: In a show of solidarity with Shiv Sena’s Navi Mumbai District Chief Vijay Chaugule, Airoli witnessed a bandh on Saturday, August 3. The bandh was organized in response to Chaugule’s ongoing hunger strike, which began on August 1. Chaugule’s protest aims to urge the Navi Mumbai Slum Rehabilitation Authority (NMSRA) to initiate a biometric survey and to ensure the permanent demolition of unauthorized houses constructed by project victims.
On the third day of Chaugule’s hunger strike, his health significantly deteriorated, prompting concerns among his supporters. Despite initial resistance, Chaugule consented to begin treatment under public pressure, following medical advice. His critical condition has intensified the urgency of his demands and galvanized public support.
In a united display of backing for Chaugule’s cause, traders in Airoli observed the bandh, resulting in the closure of shops and markets across Airoli, Digha, and Rabale. The bandh, which lasted until noon, underscored the community’s support for Chaugule’s demands.
Chaugule ended his hunger strike after receiving assurances from Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The fast was initially intended to compel the NMSRA to commence a biometric survey. However, with MP Naresh Mhaske and Chief Minister Shinde intervening, and a commitment from Shinde to start the slum survey on Monday, Chaugule decided to call off his strike. He expressed his gratitude to Chief Minister Shinde for the prompt action and support, which played a crucial role in the resolution of his protest.
