Bhayandar: In a significant step towards enhancing traffic regulation, the Mira Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar (MBVV) police commissionerate has initiated the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor and penalise traffic violations across the region.

Within just 15 days of implementation, the AI system flagged 194 violations, including 163 cases of non-compliance of seatbelt and 30 cases of riding without helmets.

The deployment of AI surveillance technology has considerably eased the workload on traffic personnel. The system, capable of real-time monitoring, automatically identifies rule violators and facilitates swift issuance of e-challans, backed by photographic evidence.

“In the digital age, leveraging technology is crucial for effective law enforcement. The AI-based monitoring has enhanced our ability to identify infractions instantly and respond without delay,” a traffic department official said.

Officials say the AI system aims to create a safer and more disciplined traffic environment through automation, transparency, and efficiency.

“This is not just a monitoring tool—it is a life-saving measure that fosters traffic discipline and helps prevent accidents,” the official added.

According to MBVV police, the AI initiative reflects a forward-looking approach that blends innovation with enforcement. “It is a fine example of discipline, safety, and technology working together. Despite existing infrastructure limitations, the system offers real-time insights, reduces manual intervention, and boosts operational efficiency,” the official said.
