Vashi: A 30-year-old man suffered severe burns after climbing onto the roof of a local train and coming into contact with a high-voltage overhead wire at Vashi railway station on August 11.

The injured youth, identified as Ankur Pandey, was travelling on a local train from Wadala to Panvel when he allegedly climbed onto the roof at Mankhurd. According to police, the train reached Vashi station at around 5:10 p.m., where Pandey came in contact with the overhead live wire, triggering severe burns.

Passengers alerted the railway police after hearing his screams. Officers from Vashi Railway Police reached the spot and pulled him down from the roof. Pandey was initially taken to Vashi Municipal Hospital but later shifted to J.J. Hospital in Mumbai due to the extent of his injuries.

Senior Police Inspector Kiran Undare of Vashi Railway Police said preliminary investigations suggest Pandey may have been attempting suicide, though the motive has yet to be confirmed. Efforts are underway to trace his relatives.

The incident caused a temporary disruption of services on August 11 on the Harbour Line before normalcy was restored. Police inquiries are underway.
