In a stunning display of power hitting, the West Indies halted Zimbabwe's impressive run in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 with a commanding 107-run victory in their opening at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday. The Caribbean side, led by explosive half-centuries from Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell, posted a formidable total of 254 for 6, marking the highest score of the tournament and the second-highest in T20 World Cup history.
Zimbabwe, who had previously triumphed over cricketing giants Australia and Sri Lanka in the group stage, faced a daunting chase. Despite a promising start in the Super Eight phase, they crumbled under pressure, finishing their innings at 147 all out.
Electing to field first, Zimbabwe initially contained the West Indies, restricting them to 55 for 2 in the power play. However, Hetmyer, who was given two lives (when on 9 and later on 70) during his innings, capitalised on the opportunities, scoring a blistering 85 runs off just 34 balls. His 19-ball half-century was the fastest by a West Indian in T20 World Cup history, showcasing his explosive batting prowess with seven fours and seven sixes.
Rovman Powell also made a significant contribution, scoring 59 runs off 35 balls, as the duo set a record for the fastest 100-run partnership in the tournament. Their aggressive batting helped the West Indies reach milestones rapidly, with the team crossing the 150-mark in just 13 overs.
Zimbabwe's response was shaky from the outset, losing three wickets for just 20 runs. Matthew Forde and Akeal Hosein wreaked havoc on the Zimbabwean batting lineup, with Hosein claiming 3 for 28 and Motie taking 4 for 28. Despite a late surge from Brad Evans, who scored 43 runs off 21 balls and his 44-run stand with tail ender Richard Ngarava amidst huge cheers from the sporting crowd, just the highest for Zimbabwe on the day, it was the highest 10th-wicket partnership in T20 World Cups., Zimbabwe's innings faltered, culminating in their first defeat of the tournament.
With this victory, the West Indies solidified their status as a formidable contender by topping Group 1 ahead of last edition’s finalist South Africa on the basis of Net Run Rate (+5.350 as against +3.800) despite the two strong contenders winning all five of their matches thus far. The Sahi Hope lead Caribbean team has sent a clear message to their rivals: they are back in T20 cricket with a vengeance in their bid to claim their third World Cup title.
"When you score over 250 runs in a T20 match, it’s a testament to your batting unit’s strength. Yet, we remain grounded. Achieving milestones is great, but our focus is on playing our best cricket. Each game is a new challenge, and we must keep improving. Confidence is high, but we can’t dwell on past successes. The road ahead is tough, with South Africa and India next. We aim to keep pushing our limits and putting pressure on the opposition. This is just the beginning; the real test lies ahead." — Shai Hope, Captain of the West Indies
