Mumbai: A Mangroves and Coastline Cleanup Drive was conducted on March 15 at Carter Road by the Environment Life Foundation, supported by Jotun India Pvt. Ltd., Mangrove Foundation, and location partner Swachh Vasundhara Abhiyan. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the ecological importance of mangroves and reduce marine litter along Mumbai’s coastline.
Mangroves play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance and supporting human survival. They act as natural buffers during storms, stabilise shorelines, reduce coastal erosion by over 50%, serve as nurseries for marine life, filter water pollution, absorb carbon, and sustain livelihoods for millions.
Speaking at the event, Dharmesh Barai, Founder of Environment Life Foundation, said, “Mangroves are silent soldiers protecting our coastlines and biodiversity. While planting mangroves is essential, we must also prevent pollution from reaching creeks and oceans. We urge our newly elected Mayor to take bold steps to address waste management at the source.”
Madhvi Marathe, Marketing Head at Jotun India Pvt. Ltd., added, “Learning about mangroves’ importance through this drive has motivated us to contribute towards protecting this ecosystem.” Swapna Sawant, HR Head India Management at Jotun India, said, “As a corporate organisation, we will encourage more people to join such initiatives for a healthier planet.”
Around 35 volunteers participated in the drive, collectively removing approximately 250 kg of marine litter, including plastic debris, bottles, discarded bean bags, and large quantities of thermocol balls. Representatives from the Mangrove Foundation appreciated the effort and pledged continued support for initiatives safeguarding mangroves and coastal ecosystems.
