Vasudev Balwant Phadke auditorium in Panvel gets a new look

The Panvel Municipal Corporation's (PMC) Vasudev Balwant Phadke auditorium is set to reopen after a break of two to three months for extensive maintenance and renovations. With an investment of Rs. 55 lakhs, the auditorium’s stage has been given a complete makeover, addressing long-standing issues that had plagued performers and audiences alike.

Built 11 years ago, the auditorium experienced leakage problems from the very first monsoon, causing significant damage to the stage. Despite the demand for a quality performance venue in the regions of Karjat, Pen, Panvel, and Uran, the auditorium condition had deteriorated, limiting its use for various cultural events and theatrical performances. Responding to numerous complaints from drama artists, former Commissioner Ganesh Deshmukh initiated the repair work, assigning the project to the state's most experienced company.

The auditorium, which has been closed since March for these renovations, now boasts a completely refurbished stage. A new sound system for audiences to enjoy the shows and programs. Additionally, a front door has been installed for better stage management.

One of the significant upgrades includes the numbering of the auditorium's 665 seats. Previously, audiences faced difficulties locating their reserved seats due to the lack of permanent numbers, with paper stickers often getting removed or damaged. Now, each chair is covered with numbers stitched onto them, though concerns remain about the potential for theft of these removable covers.

During the closure, the air-conditioning system was also thoroughly repaired, ensuring a comfortable environment for future performances. The well-known theater maintenance company, Pandurang Kothare Associates, carried out these extensive renovations, effectively breathing new life into the auditorium.

As per an official, the auditorium is expected to reopen for the public from June 16, with bookings for drama artists set to commence shortly thereafter.
