Belapur: Aiming for the ambitious target of planting 1.25 lakh saplings with widespread public participation, the garden department of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has commenced large-scale tree plantation across all its divisions. Free saplings are being distributed to citizens as part of the initiative.

Today, Surangi (Mammea suriga), a fragrant flowering tree, was planted in the NMMC headquarters at the hands of additional commissioner Sunil Pawar. On the occasion, chief accounts and finance officer Satyawan Ubale, deputy commissioner of the garden department Kisanrao Palande, and Deputy Commissioner of the Encroachment Department Dr. Kailas Gaikwad also participated in planting Surangi saplings.

The flowers of the Surangi tree, known for their beautiful four-petaled structure, fill the surroundings with a delightful fragrance. Scientifically known as Mammea suriga, these flowers are traditionally used to make garlands worn in the hair and are highly valued in the cosmetics industry for their long-lasting scent. The Government of Maharashtra has recommended the plantation of Surangi trees in this year's afforestation program.
