As temperatures soar to 40 degrees Celsius, the relentless summer heat is taking its toll on the traffic police force in Navi Mumbai. Despite the scorching conditions, these dedicated officers are tirelessly regulating traffic, ensuring the safety and convenience of citizens.
While most people opt to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day, traffic police officers are out on the streets and squares, braving the sun's harsh rays to enforce traffic laws and tackle reckless driving. Despite facing criticism from some citizens, these officers remain committed to their duty, rain or shine.
With no respite in sight, traffic police are stationed at busy intersections, highways, and important roads throughout Navi Mumbai. However, many of these locations lack adequate shade, leaving officers exposed to the unforgiving sun for hours on end. Both male and female officers are feeling the impact of the heat, with some experiencing dizziness and skin ailments as a result.
In the past, NGOs and companies provided traffic booths to offer some relief to officers on duty. However, most of these booths have disappeared, leaving officers without shelter from the sun. Despite the challenges, officers continue to prioritize public safety, often at the expense of their own health.
Speaking anonymously, a traffic police officer highlighted the need for a shift in public perception, emphasizing that officers are also human beings deserving of empathy and respect. Despite facing criticism for enforcing traffic regulations, these officers are often the first responders at accident scenes, demonstrating their dedication to public service.
As Navi Mumbai serves as a transit hub for important highways like Mumbai-Goa and Mumbai-Pune, traffic police must remain vigilant to prevent traffic congestion and ensure the safety of VIPs and commuters alike. Despite the demanding nature of their work, Deputy Commissioner of Police Navi Mumbai Transport Division, Tirupati Kakade, has issued instructions to protect officers from the sun's heat, including rotating duty assignments and providing access to drinking water.
