Encourages reading amidst nature
Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has initiated a captivating initiative, by introducing nature libraries within select parks across the city. With a vision to foster a love for reading amidst the serene embrace of nature, this novel concept has taken root in Lokmanya Tilak Park near Gaondevi Maidan in Naupada, Nakshatravan Park in Kalwa, and Community Park in Vartak Nagar on a pilot basis.
The brainchild of the 'Chala Vachuya' campaign, aimed at encouraging reading habits among residents, the initiative seeks to transform public parks into reading-friendly spaces. Abhijit Bangar, Commissioner of Thane Municipal Corporation, expressed enthusiasm about expanding this innovative concept beyond the confines of classrooms, introducing open libraries within municipal parks.
At these nature libraries, an array of books awaits, ranging from literature on gardening, the significance of flora and fauna, novels, travelogues, poetry collections, to children's literature. Commissioner Bangar emphasized the vital role of this endeavour in mainstreaming book reading, envisioning a scenario where the sight of books becomes a catalyst for encouraging citizens to indulge in reading.
The nature libraries, currently housing around 800 books, have been generously contributed by various social organizations, citizens, and existing libraries. Readers are invited to peruse these literary treasures while seated within the tranquil environs of the parks. However, borrowing books for external use is not permitted; readers are expected to return the books to the library shelves before leaving the park premises.
"This initiative aligns with the current need to make books and reading a part of everyday life," Commissioner Bangar remarked, underscoring the significance of integrating reading habits seamlessly into daily routines.
