Approximately 7,000 students from the fifth to tenth grades in schools under the Thane Municipal Corporation in collaboration with the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), will impart nature related education training from this year.
The objective of this program is to provide environmental education to the students. It is an opportunity for underprivileged students coming from economically weaker sections to learn about nature, understand the importance of biodiversity conservation, and the significance of biodiversity. Commissioner, Abhijit Bangar, expressed his belief that this initiative will contribute significantly to their academic development.
Due to the collaboration with BNHS, students in the municipal schools will have a good opportunity for nature education, which will be beneficial for the students of other privileged schools as well. As responsible citizens of Thane, this environmental awareness will contribute to their personal development, as emphasised by Commissioner Bangar.
During this program, the BNHS education officer and environmental awareness coordinator will organise interactive and conceptual-based sessions on various topics. The program will cover birdlife, flora, fauna, bio-diversity, the impact of pollution caused by plastic, the Clean India Campaign, and the promotion of an environmentally friendly lifestyle. These programs will be organized in schools throughout the upcoming year.
Furthermore, the municipal corporation will establish environmental education centres for the students in different locations such as Thane Creek, where students will be taken for field trips. They will be guided on how to observe and document biodiversity, plant life, and bird species.
Through this program, the students of the municipal schools will receive nature education, which will increase their environmental awareness. They will gain knowledge about the environment, forests, wildlife, biodiversity, and their role in conservation efforts in Mumbai and Thane. This program will help increase environmental literacy among students and teachers alike.
