Mumbra: The accident at Mumbra station which took place on June 9 has intensified demands for local train services to commence from Diva, with activists and political leaders urging railway authorities to address overcrowding on the Thane-Diva corridor.

The stretch, which ranked second in fall-related fatalities in 2024, has struggled with packed trains and inadequate services, despite rapid population growth in Diva, Mumbra and Kalwa.

Following the Mumbra incident, BJP MLC Niranjan Davkhare, said passengers and activists urged him to raise the issue with the railway administration.
“It is a fair demand that would provide much-needed relief to commuters. We will push for its implementation,” he said.

Echoing the concerns, Shiv Sena MP Dr Shrikant Shinde called for the swift introduction of Diva-CSMT local trains. He also stressed the need to extend the fifth and sixth railway lines beyond Kurla to CSMT to ease congestion on the network.

Whereas, NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad reiterated his long-standing demand for Diva-originating services. “The population in Mumbra and Kalwa has grown exponentially, but local train services remain limited. Air-conditioned locals are not the solution, trains from Kasara, Titwala and Kalyan arrive full, leaving no room for local commuters,” he said.

Activists believe launching trains from Diva could drastically reduce crowding and make daily commutes safer. As public pressure mounts, citizens hope that the railways will get its act together
