Bhayandar: A 19-year-old student from Bhayandar, who secured 86 per cent marks in Class 12 examinations, died by suicide, reportedly distressed over his "low" scores. The tragic incident occurred at the student’s residence in Bhayandar West.

According to police, the deceased, identified as Ritesh Yadav, lived with his parents and sister at Sai Baba Chawl, Morva Gaon, Bhayandar. Ritesh’s father, Ravishankar Yadav, is an auto-rickshaw driver.

Family members stated that despite scoring 86 per cent in his HSC (Science) exams, Ritesh was deeply disappointed, feeling that his marks were insufficient. This sense of perceived failure reportedly led him into a state of depression over the past few days.

On May 15, while his parents were at work, Ritesh resorted to the extreme step. His sister discovered him hanging from the ceiling of the living room. She immediately informed their parents, who rushed home. Neighbours helped transport Ritesh to the Pandit Bhimsen Joshi (Tembha) Government Hospital in Bhayandar, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Bhayandar Police have registered an accidental death report in the case. Investigating officers revealed that the family had hoped Ritesh would pursue a career in medicine, adding further pressure on the young student.

A senior police official commented, "Preliminary investigation suggests that academic pressure and the feeling of not meeting expectations led the young boy to take this extreme step. We urge parents and students to seek help and talk openly about their mental health."
