Shiv Sena protests trigger tension in Durgadi Fort area in Kalyan

Kalyan: The government decision to temporarily close the Durga Mata Temple in Kalyan on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha triggered tension in the Durgadi Fort area in Kalyan. Workers belonging to both factions of Shiv Sena (Shinde and Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) tried to storm the temple atop the hill while prayers were being offered at the foothills.

Both Sena factions assembled at the foothills separately and held bell-ringing protests demanding access to the temple. Several protesters were detained for violating prohibitory orders.

Shiv Sena leaders claimed the district administration had been violating the rights of the Hindu community while pandering to a minority community.

"The Hindutva cause on which Eknath Shinde became the chief minister has been forsaken. People had expressed hope that the injustice being done to temples would be stopped, but there has been no change in the situation," senior Sena (UBT) leader Vijay Salvi alleged.

The dispute between Hindus and Muslims over offering prayers at the Durgadi fort has been a regular feature for years.
