Rs. 3.7 Lakh Fine Imposed

Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Regional Transport Office (RTO) has intensified its crackdown on illegal rickshaw operations in the city. Over the past three days, action has been taken against 156 rickshaw drivers for various violations, resulting in a fine of Rs.3,70,000.

The enforcement effort targets rickshaw drivers operating without proper licenses, charging excessive fares, and failing to use meters. Some drivers were also found operating vehicles with expired licenses and lapsed insurance or fitness certifications.

The RTO has reported that out of the 156 rickshaws scrutinized:

- 57 were found operating without a driving license,

- 45 had expired licenses,

- 30 had lapsed vehicle insurance,

- 15 had lapsed vehicle fitness certificates, and

- 9 were found lacking Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates.

The action was taken following numerous complaints from passengers who have faced issues with rickshaw drivers refusing to use meters, demanding extra fares, or rejecting rides. With a significant working-class population relying on rickshaws for daily commutes, these measures aim to ensure fair and lawful service.

RTO Deputy Regional Officer Surendra Nikam confirmed the fines and stressed the importance of compliance with regulations to maintain order and safety in public transportation.
