The deadline for submitting online applications for the Right to Education (RTE) admission process for the 2024-25 academic year has been extended to June 4. The education department has stated that no further extensions will be granted after this date.

Under Section 12(c)(1) of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009, the State Government provides free education to children from weaker and disadvantaged sections in all private schools (excluding minority schools). This initiative ensures that 25% of the total number of eligible students receive free admission. The process is being conducted online.

Initially, the admission process was scheduled from May 17 to May 31. To date, 18,796 online applications have been received for 11,377 seats available in 643 schools. Admission will be determined through a lottery system, and parents of successful applicants will need to present the original documents of their children for verification by the education department.

The RTE admission process faced controversy from the beginning, with the Bombay High Court ordering the cancellation of this year's new admission procedure in favor of the old system. This ruling resulted in only a 15-day window for the admission process, causing dissatisfaction among parents. In response to parental demands for more time, the government has decided to extend the deadline.
