Mira-Bhayandar: In a major push for smarter traffic enforcement, the Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar (MBVV) Police Commissionerate has introduced an AI-powered traffic monitoring system aimed at improving road safety, discipline, and transparency. The initiative is part of the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s 100-day action plan under a seven-point programme to integrate technology into governance.

Launched as a pilot in March 2025, the system issued its first e-challan on 7 April, marking a significant shift in how traffic violations are detected and penalised.

“This AI-based system is about more than enforcement—it’s about saving lives and building safer roads,” said MBVV Police Commissioner Madhukar Pandey. “We’re using innovation to bring efficiency and accountability to traffic management.”

“This is about maximising safety with minimal manual intervention,”  said Deputy Commissioner of Police Prakash Gaikwad. “It’s a model of smart governance built on technology and efficiency.”

The system currently operates on selected routes and automatically detects multiple violations in real time, including:

  • Helmet non-compliance: Identifies riders and pillion passengers without helmets
  • Triple-seat riding: Flags instances of more than two riders on a two-wheeler
  • Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR): Accurately captures vehicle licence plates for swift challan issuance

Unlike manual enforcement, which often relies on photographs or videos taken by officers, the AI system provides timestamped photographic evidence for each offence, streamlining the process and ensuring transparency.

Looking ahead, phase two of the project will include features like wrong-side driving detection, speed monitoring, and real-time alerts for accidents or large gatherings, helping police respond quickly to critical situations.
