In what could be a major relief for the common man, the prices of pulses and cereals have witnessed a sharp decline, following an increase in supply of the commodity at the APMC market. The increase in imports of the said commodity is another reason for the prices heading south.
The prices of chana dal has dropped by 12%, toor dal by 5%, and dry green peas by a staggering 140%. In the retail market, the soaring prices of pulses in recent years had forced households to seek alternatives, with tur dal, chana dal, and urad dal touching Rs200 per kg at one point. However, due to favourable monsoon conditions during 2024, production improved significantly, stabilizing the supply chain.
Toor dal prices at the APMC market hovered between Rs110-Rs120 per kg and dry green peas at Rs120, compared to their previous rates of Rs160-Rs200 and Rs250 respectively.
Traders anticipate that continued arrivals will keep prices within an affordable range, offering respite to consumers.
Mehul Bhanushali, a wholesaler, stated “The high import volume and new stock introductions have played a major role in stabilizing the market”.
