Citizens brace for sweltering summer ahead
As scorching temperatures soar to unprecedented heights, citizens in Navi Mumbai find themselves battling against the oppressive heatwave that has gripped the city for the past two days. With the mercury peaking at a staggering 36 to 37 degrees Celsius, residents are feeling the heat like never before, marking this as the highest temperature ever recorded in March within the city limits.
This spike in temperature comes as no surprise, as the Indian Meteorological Department and the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences had previously warned of an impending heatwave across Maharashtra between March and May this year. Predictions indicated that Navi Mumbai, along with various other parts of the state, would experience extreme heat and soaring temperatures, particularly from the second week of March onwards.
Typically, temperature in March in Navi Mumbai range between 35 to 36 degrees Celsius. However, this year has seen an unprecedented rise, with the thermometer hitting the 40-degree mark, leaving residents grappling with sweltering conditions. The intensifying heat has not only led to increased sweating but also raised concerns about heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke, particularly with the dry air exacerbating the situation.
Looking ahead, forecasters anticipate that the scorching conditions will persist for the foreseeable future, prompting worries among Navi Mumbaikars about the severity of the upcoming summer months in April and May. In response to the blistering heatwave, residents have resorted to various measures to stay cool, including indulging in adequate water and other cooling beverages, seeking refuge in air-conditioned spaces.
Precautions to Beat the Heat:
In light of the extreme temperatures, health experts have issued several precautions to help residents cope with the heatwave and minimize the risk of heat-related illnesses:
1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty. Opt for hydrating beverages like ORS, lemon juice, rice kanji, or buttermilk to replenish lost fluids. Avoid dehydrating drinks such as tea, coffee, alcohol, and soft drinks.
2. Dress Appropriately: Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting cotton clothes to stay cool. Consider covering your head with a cap or a handkerchief when venturing outdoors to shield yourself from direct sun exposure.
3. Seek Shade: Whenever possible, seek shade or stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
4. Take Cool Baths: Experts recommend taking cold showers or baths at least twice a day to lower body temperature and provide relief from the heat.
By adhering to these precautions and staying vigilant during the heatwave, residents can mitigate the adverse effects of the scorching temperatures and stay safe and healthy as they navigate through the hot summer months ahead in Navi Mumbai.
