In response to an interim judgement dated April 29, 2024, issued by the Supreme Court (SC) in Civil Appeal No. 6065/2024, Special Leave Petition No. 10849/2023, Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) is taking swift action to implement revised property tax payments. The Supreme Court directive mandates the payment of all outstanding property tax dues from the assessment years 2020-21 and 2021-22 within a two-month period.
This decision is expected to inject approximately Rs. 750 crores into the treasury of Panvel Municipal Corporation. Additionally, the Supreme Court clarified on May 18, 2024, through Miscellaneous Application No. 952/2024, that property owners must settle all outstanding property tax amounts from the assessment year 2021-22 onwards.
Commissioner and Administrator of Panvel Municipal Corporation, Prashant Rasal, announced that the calculation of revised property tax payments has been expedited. The revised payments, categorized into Parts A, B, and C, representing different assessment periods, are now available on the Municipal Corporation's online portal and mobile app.
As per the Supreme Court's directions:
- Payment of property tax dues in Part A is subject to the interim order, with penalty amounts to be determined by future court decisions.
- Payment of dues in Part B is mandatory by June 29, 2024.
Citizens are urged to pay their taxes before the deadline through the online portal, mobile app, or municipal office. To incentivize timely payments, a 5% discount on the tax demand for the year 2024-25, initially set to expire on May 31, has been extended until June 30, 2024.
Furthermore, citizens are encouraged to utilize the 2% total exemption offered for online payments. Deputy Commissioner of Property Tax, Maruti Gaikwad, and Assistant Commissioner, Swaroop Kharge, oversaw the preparation of revised payments in accordance with the Supreme Court's directive.
The Corporation emphasizes the importance of compliance with the Supreme Court's orders and urges citizens to cooperate in this process.
