In a significant move to encourage voter turnout for the Lok Sabha General Elections in Thane district, Collector and District Election Officer Ashok Shingare has issued an order declaring a paid holiday on May 20, 2024. This decision comes in accordance with Section 135B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, aiming to ensure that every eligible voter exercises their democratic right.

Thane district comprises the 23-Bhiwandi, 24-Kalyan, and 25-Thane Lok Sabha constituencies, all scheduled for polling on Monday, May 20, 2024, during the fifth phase of elections. In a bid to facilitate maximum voter participation, all individuals listed in the electoral roll of these constituencies are entitled to avail of a leave of absence on the specified date.

The order issued by the Collector and District Election Officer applies to all heads of establishments across the district, mandating them to grant leave to officers, employees, and daily wage workers under their jurisdiction on May 20, 2024, subject to certain conditions. This directive encompasses Government Establishments, Private Establishments, Daily Employment Establishments, Shops, Companies, and all similar entities. However, exemptions apply to establishments where the absence of workers may pose a risk or result in significant loss.

Non-compliance with this order carries legal repercussions, with heads of establishments facing potential action under Section 135B (2) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Furthermore, the directive extends to establishments outside Thane district but employs individuals listed in the voter rolls of the district, ensuring uniformity in facilitating voter participation.
