Aims to implement waste-to-gas and power generation projects in Navi Mumbai
In Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's (NMMC) jurisdiction, an advanced solid waste management project based on scientific landfill techniques is underway in the Turbhe MIDC area.
This project, recognized at the national level, focuses on the implementation of environmentally friendly gas generation and power generation projects on behalf of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation.
In the early years leading up to 2004, waste disposal took place at CIDCO's launch site in Sector 14, Koparkhairane. During this period, a significant number of complaints were lodged by both citizens and public representatives, and opposition to the waste site emerged at various levels.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation embarked on a search for an alternative location. In 2004, a 36-acre site was secured from the Collectorate in the Turbhe MIDC area, and in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rules of 2004, a scientific solid waste management project was initiated.
Under the JNNURM scheme, a project with a daily capacity of 350 metric tons for fertilizer production and an industrial fuel production project, namely RDF (Refuse-Derived Fuel) production, were initiated at this location. After the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules in 2016, the project's capacity was increased through necessary modifications.
While developing this modern, scientifically regulated solid waste management project in Turbhe MIDC, the process of scientifically closing the old dumping site at Koparkhairane was carried out meticulously.
A substantial amount of greenery was planted at this location to create a nature reserve. Today, over 7,000 to 8,000 people, both young and old, visit this place daily for morning and evening jogging and recreation. Additionally, an urban forest, following the Miyawaki style, has been established by planting 65,000 indigenous saplings in the vast area near the nature park.
In this manner, special attention is given to environmental sustainability in any project and work. Under the guidance of NMMC Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar, the solid waste management project at Turbhe MIDC has been continually updated and adapted to modern technologies with a vision to make it well-suited to the contemporary era.
Currently, several major cities are taking steps to implement gas and electricity generation projects from organic waste in line with government policies. The central government has also issued orders that emphasize the establishment of environmentally friendly projects for gas and electricity generation from waste, utilizing the CSR funds of prominent oil companies in the country, such as BPCL, Indian Oil, ONGC, and GAIL. As a result, gas and electricity generation projects from raw materials have been initiated in some cities with the support of these CSR funds.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, which has consistently been at the forefront of experimentation in solid waste management, is now taking proactive steps in this area.
In line with this, prominent industrial groups like ONGC are eager to implement waste-to-gas and power generation projects in Navi Mumbai. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation is conducting a comprehensive assessment in this regard. The successful implementation of this project will further enhance the capabilities of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation in solid waste management.
