In a significant move to curb air and noise pollution caused by construction activities, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has collected a total fine of Rs. 1.17 crore from developers who violated the newly implemented Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). This comes after the High Court of Mumbai passed an order on December 11, 2023, directing the NMMC to address air and noise pollution issues arising from construction activities.
The SOP, designed to mitigate environmental pollution, was approved by NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailash Shinde on June 19, 2024, and mandates strict adherence to noise and air pollution control measures on construction sites. Following a series of citizen complaints regarding blasting, noise, and air pollution, a task force was established by NMMC to ensure the enforcement of these guidelines.
In line with the court's directions and the SOP, NMMC conducted inspections at 78 construction sites across the city. These inspections, carried out by Assistant Commissioners and Department Officers, revealed several violations. The fine of Rs. 1,17,16,931 was collected from developers for failing to follow the prescribed norms, including improper noise control and pollution measures.
NMMC has emphasized that it will continue to monitor construction sites closely to ensure compliance with environmental standards. The corporation has also issued instructions to all concerned departments to take appropriate action against any further violations. The aim is to foster cleaner, healthier construction practices across the city, promoting a sustainable urban environment.
