In a strategic move to boost the financial strength of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has set up a special five-member task force. The newly formed task force is tasked with devising measures to increase the corporation's income by addressing existing revenue shortfalls, planning for the collection of arrears, and identifying new sources of revenue.

The committee has been instructed to submit its report within 15 days.

The task force will be chaired by Additional Commissioner Mr. Sunil Pawar, and its members include Chief Accounts and Finance Officer Mr. Satyawan Ubale, Deputy Commissioner of the Property Tax Department Mr. Sharad Pawar, Additional City Engineer Mr. Arvind Shinde, and Director of Urban Planning Mr. Somnath Kekane. The group’s mission is to develop strategies to strengthen the municipal corporation’s finances, ensuring long-term financial sustainability.

Dr. Shinde has directed the task force to review the current operational practices and suggest any necessary changes to improve revenue generation. The proposal should outline the expected timeline for implementing these changes, the feasibility of execution, and how these changes will directly contribute to income growth.

In addition to addressing arrears and ongoing revenue collection, the task force is expected to provide a detailed plan for exploring new income sources, with specific recommendations on how to improve the existing system.
There is also a focus on cost-saving measures, including identifying areas where unnecessary expenditure can be cut without affecting essential services.

Further instructions include investigating potential opportunities to secure government funding for municipal projects, which could free up municipal funds for other crucial civic infrastructure work.
The task force has been encouraged to identify redundant or overlapping schemes and propose their closure. It is also tasked with studying successful revenue-enhancing strategies implemented by other municipal corporations, with the goal of adopting and adapting the best practices.

Following a comprehensive review of the proposals from various departments, the task force is expected to prepare a department-specific plan for increasing revenue, alongside a clear implementation timeline. This will then be presented to the Municipal Commissioner for approval.

With NMMC’s financial health directly tied to the revenue generated from taxes and other charges, Dr. Shinde has emphasised the importance of increasing income to ensure the provision of high-quality civic amenities for Navi Mumbai’s residents.
