In a resounding achievement, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has secured third position among the cleanest cities in India in the prestigious 'Swachh Survekshan 2023.'
Indore and Surat claimed the first and second positions respectively, leaving Navi Mumbai at a commendable third. The grand prize distribution ceremony took place at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, graced honourable President of India, Draupadi Murmu. The award was received by NMMC Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar, amid the presence of Union Urban Development and Housing Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Secretary Manish Joshi, and other dignitaries.
Notably, Navi Mumbai achieved the rare feat of being the only city in Maharashtra and one of just two cities nationwide to receive a prestigious seven-star rating for being a garbage-free city. The city also clinched the highest Water Plus rating in the Open Defecation Free (ODF) category for pollution-free cities.
Speaking from the ceremony, Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar expressed gratitude and dedicated the award to the citizens of Navi Mumbai, acknowledging their active participation and awareness in maintaining the city's cleanliness. He highlighted that this national recognition is a collective result of the collaborative efforts of sanitation workers, officials, employees, public representatives, citizens, and the media.
During the 'Swachh Survekshan 2023' survey, the central inspection team of 'Swachh Bharat Mission' interacted with citizens and evaluated their opinions about city cleanliness. The citizens' feedback, along with on-site inspections and document reviews, contributed to Navi Mumbai's elevated ranking.
Key initiatives undertaken by NMMC to enhance cleanliness included extensive citizen participation programs, innovative waste management practices, and various cleanliness drives. Special mention goes to citizens who took time off from their daily routines to assist sanitation workers, as well as NGOs, boards, women's groups, and senior citizens' organizations that actively contributed to the cause.
Under 'Swachh Survekshan 2023,' Navi Mumbai implemented several noteworthy projects, such as the 'Three R Centres,' 'Recycle Mart,' 'Recycle Bazaar,' 'Three R on Wheels,' and 'Dry Waste Bank.' These initiatives focused on reducing, reusing, and recycling waste, garnering positive responses from the citizens.
Furthermore, the city's efforts to improve air quality, green spaces, and aesthetic appeal were highlighted. The construction of aspirational toilets, 'Fish Fed' initiative in Diwale fish market, and a state-of-the-art C&D Waste project showcased Navi Mumbai's commitment to sustainable development.
