Navi Mumbai: As the monsoon sets in, trekking trails, waterfall visits, cycling rides and offbeat getaways are drawing growing numbers of adventure enthusiasts across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. But experts warn that the season's charm often comes with serious risks, as many trekkers ignore basic safety precautions while exploring waterfalls, overflowing streams and water channels, sometimes with fatal consequences.
“A guided trip is always the safest option for any monsoon adventure, whether it is a waterfall trail, river rafting, crossing flowing streams, exploring water channels or trekking through hills and mountains,” said Saurav Agarwal, an experienced Sahyadri trekker and mountaineer, who has consistently urged citizens to opt for guided expeditions for their own safety and that of their families.
Citing the tragic accidents at Pandavkada Waterfall and the recent rescue operation at Zenith Waterfall, Agarwal said such incidents underline the need for professional supervision during monsoon outings. He cautioned travellers against venturing into unfamiliar terrain without expert guidance or attempting to cross overflowing streams and waterfalls on their own.
Agarwal is the co-founder of Wandering Souls, a travel initiative launched in 2017 specialising in outdoor adventures, heritage walks, cycling experiences, backpacking expeditions and curated road journeys.
“Over the years, we have introduced thousands of travellers to lesser-known destinations while promoting responsible tourism, small-group travel and sustainable outdoor practices,” he said, adding that his team conducts guided treks and family-friendly outdoor experiences across Maharashtra with an emphasis on trained trek leaders and Leave No Trace principles.
Guiding hundreds of participants on monsoon expeditions every year, Agarwal stressed that adventure tourism must remain safe, accessible and community-driven, encouraging people to explore beyond usual tourist spots in experienced hands.
