Kalyan: The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s (KDMC) waste processing centre at Umbarde in Kalyan West has come under scrutiny following allegations of operational lapses, safety violations and child labour raised by BJP MLA Sulabha Gaikwad during an inspection. The visit was also marred by an alleged assault on the centre’s supervisor by BJP functionary Vijay Joshi.
Gaikwad alleged that the processing machinery was non-functional and large quantities of garbage had accumulated despite a contract worth crores of rupees. She questioned the expenditure on the project and noted that no representative of the contractor was present during the inspection.
Concerns were also raised over workers allegedly lacking identity cards and essential safety equipment. BJP workers claimed that minors were involved in waste picking and alleged that scrap from the facility was being sent to a private scrap dealer. The availability of mandatory documents for vehicles operating at the dumping ground was also questioned.
Gaikwad demanded that all machinery be made operational immediately, adequate manpower be deployed, and action be taken against the contractor if negligence was established.
The inspection took a contentious turn when Joshi allegedly confronted and slapped the supervisor, accusing him of being under the influence of alcohol. The incident reportedly occurred in the presence of Gaikwad and KDMC Deputy Commissioner for Solid Waste Management, Dr Ramdas Kokare. However, the allegation of intoxication has not been officially confirmed.
Kokare assured that the allegations would be investigated and appropriate action taken in accordance with the rules. The civic body’s response to the alleged contractual lapses, possible involvement of minors and reported assault remains awaited.
