Mira-Bhayandar: Hundreds of fish were found dead at Goddev Lake in Bhayandar East, triggering environmental concerns among local residents and prompting immediate action by the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC).

The incident came to light on April 21, 2025, when MBMC officials noticed the mass fish mortality during a routine inspection. Goddev Lake, located within the Bharat Ratna Indira Gandhi Udyan in Goddev village, is commonly used for idol immersions during festivals, which officials believe may have contributed to the contamination of the water.

Following the discovery, MBMC teams immediately began the removal of the dead fish to prevent further deterioration of water quality. Efforts to drain the contaminated water commenced the following day, April 22.

Speaking to the media, Deepak Khambit, city engineer, MBMC, said, "We have initiated the removal of polluted water from Goddev Lake and have taken immediate steps to address the situation. Furthermore, we are implementing a broader development plan for the lake area under the Government’s Basic Amenities Development Scheme."

"Work orders have already been issued to contractors for installing a fountain and beautifying the surrounding area. We will soon begin construction of a partition wall within the lake to create a dedicated zone for idol immersions, aiming to prevent future contamination," Khambit added.
