Bhayandar: The three-member committee appointed by Mira Bhayandar commissioner to investigate the lapses that led to the death of 11-year-old Granth Mutha in the swimming pool of the Late Gopinath Munde Sports Complex, has recommended strict action, including termination of the private contractor’s contract and issuance of notices to the civic officials concerned.

Granth drowned in the pool in the corporation run Late Gopinath Munde Sports Complex on April 20, 2025. The incident triggered public outrage. Navghar Police registered cases against the contractor, management staff, and four swimming coaches.

The inquiry committee has suggested MBMC to cancel the contract and seize the security deposit of the contractor and seek written explanations from involved officers. The report also suggests administrative accountability within the civic sports department, which had outsourced the management of the facility to Sahas Charitable Trust.

Following the incident, MBMC had served a show cause notice to the contractor. The commissioner Radha Binod Sharma constituted an inquiry committee headed by additional commissioner Sambhaji Panpatte, city engineer Deepak Khambit and sports officer Deepali Joshi.

Sources said the Commissioner is likely to take a final decision within a week. Meanwhile, both the sports complex and the affiliated hotel have been shut down by MBMC order.

In a strongly-worded memorandum addressed to the police commissioner, leaders of political parties have demanded severe punishment for those responsible for the child’s death.
