Bhayandar: In the wake of a hike in water-borne illnesses across Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), the civic corporation has issued a public advisory urging citizens to ensure regular cleaning of water storage tanks to maintain water quality and prevent contamination.

The city receives treated water supply from the STEM Authority and Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation. Despite rigorous treatment processes and quality checks undertaken by MBMC’s water supply and sewerage department, the risk of contamination remains if water is not stored hygienically at the consumer end.

Speaking on the matter, Sharad Nanegaonkar, executive engineer of the water supply and sewerage department, MBMC, said: “We are taking all necessary measures to ensure the water supplied by the corporation is clean and safe. However, we have observed an increase in water-borne illnesses, which may be linked to poor maintenance of domestic water storage systems.”

He further emphasized the role of residents in ensuring safe water consumption. “It is essential that citizens take proactive steps by regularly cleaning both underground and overhead water tanks. Even the cleanest water can become unsafe if stored in unhygienic conditions or if there are leakages that allow contaminants to enter.”

The civic body has also advised households to implement leakage prevention measures to avoid any compromise in water quality. MBMC has appealed to all residents to cooperate with the administration and uphold public health standards through diligent water storage practices.
